Nipple discharge is a relatively common occurrence and, in many cases, is not a sign of breast cancer. It can be caused by a variety of benign conditions, such as ductal papillomas (small, non-cancerous tumors in the milk ducts), mammary duct ectasia, infections, or even hormonal imbalances caused by certain medications.

However, if the discharge is spontaneous, bloody, clear, or occurs in only one breast, it is important to have it carefully evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out more serious underlying issues. Proper diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, targeted imaging like an ultrasound or mammogram, and sometimes a laboratory analysis of the fluid. Click below to learn more.
